Enchanted Evening – Alberto Vargas

Originally published as a gatefold in the April 1942 issue of Esquire, Enchanted Evening went on to serve a far greater purpose, it was featured on posters and in promotional campaigns for the sale of US War Bonds during World War II.

Modeled by Alberto's wife and lifelong muse, Anna Mae Vargas, the figure's strawberry blonde hair, violet eyes, and flowing golden negligée inspired American troops overseas while reminding those on the home front of the need for patriotic support. It is one of the rare Vargas works that crossed from the pages of a magazine into the national wartime effort.

The original painting is part of the permanent collection at the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas.

This limited edition lithograph was published by the San Francisco Art Exchange in collaboration with the Hearst Corporation, Esquire, and the Estate of Vargas.
