What’s the difference between Vargas and “Varga” signatures?

The difference between “Vargas” and “Varga” lies in both timing and trademark. When Alberto Vargas was hired by Esquire magazine in the 1940s, they branded his work under the stylized name “Varga,” which Esquire trademarked and legally owned. As a result, all pin-up illustrations published in Esquire from that period bear the “Varga” signature. After Vargas parted ways with Esquire, he was no longer permitted to use that name and had, in effect, lost the rights to his own identity as an artist. He later returned to signing his work “Vargas,” both before and after the Esquire era—including during his celebrated years at Playboy. Collectors often view “Varga” works as a unique chapter within Vargas’s legacy, while “Vargas”-signed pieces span his full, independent career.
