Jeanne Dean was the original Varga Girl.

Beginning in 1940, when she was a teenager, Dean modeled exclusively for Vargas during his legendary run at Esquire magazine — her mother accompanying her to every session. This image first appeared in the June 1942 issue, America's first year at war, and became one of the most recognized pin-ups of the era.

What made their collaboration extraordinary was its longevity. Vargas worked with many models over the decades, but he returned to Jeanne Dean again and again — not just during the Esquire years, but long after. She was one of his most treasured subjects, and his affection for her as a muse is visible in every line.

Dean went on to sign with MGM, appear alongside Judy Garland, and travel with the USO performing for troops in Europe. She was also an accomplished poet. But to the art world, she will always be the face that launched the Varga Girl.

This is a signed limited edition lithograph on Arches paper from the Estate of Max Vargas archive. Pieces like this have historically retailed for over $1,000.

Hand signed by Jeanne Dean.
